Overview: “Gamification” is an instructional method conceptualized by British engineer Nick Pelling in 2002. To be specific, this approach does not turn the classroom into an actual game. Rather, it incorporates game elements, such as missions, points, levels, badges, leaderboards, or instant feedback, into instructional design, encouraging students to engage more deeply in a “level-up” style learning process. With clear goals and appropriate challenges, students become more willing to participate actively, take initiative, and collaborate, naturally boosting their learning motivation.

Description: Gamification is especially suitable for courses that require practice, interaction, or motivational engagement. Even in more theoretical subjects, “mission-based learning” can make knowledge easier to absorb. Mechanisms such as simple point systems, team challenges, or scenario-based tasks can all increase student investment. Learning outcomes from this method often surpass expectations.
