Overview: “English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) Courses” refer to courses in which all instructional materials, teaching, interaction, discussion, assessments, and presentations are conducted in English. The use of other languages is permitted to a limited extent when clarifying technical terms or complex concepts, but all other course activities are conducted in English. This approach helps create an immersive language environment, allowing students to naturally develop their English proficiency and global competitiveness while engaging with their subject matter.
Description: EMI courses are especially suitable for subjects with an international focus, cross-cultural content, or heavy reliance on English-language materials. By teaching entirely in English, faculty can strengthen students’ language skills and increase the course’s appeal to international and exchange students. Our university has established relevant subsidy guidelines to encourage faculty to plan and apply for EMI courses. We warmly invite faculty to join in building a more internationally oriented learning environment where students can connect with the world right in the classroom!
Model Example: Prof. Jih-Hsuan Lin’s EMI course “Virtual Reality and the Metaverse” offers an analysis on and introduction to virtual reality and the metaverse, exploring its applications from multiple perspectives while examining related business opportunities. Topics include innovative academic applications of VR, industry applications, marketing and branding uses, NFTs, and virtual amusement parks. Take a look at Prof. Lin’s all-English teaching!
