To enhance teaching quality and improve teaching assistants' (TAs) instructional capabilities, National Chengchi University (NCCU) has formulated these subsidy guidelines based on the "Regulations for the Implementation of the Teaching Assistant System." The subsidy applies to currently enrolled TAs approved by the Center for Teaching and Learning Development and the General Education Center. TA support is available for discussion, seminar, practical, and course management types. The number of TAs per course is determined by student enrollment and course type. Review and approval are conducted by a dedicated committee appointed by the Office of Academic Affairs.
Application procedures vary depending on the course type:
Core General Education Courses: Processed by the General Education Center.
Discussion (Type A), Seminar (B1), Practical (B2), and Course Management (C) Courses: Handled by the Center for Teaching and Learning Development.
Review criteria include online syllabus availability, enrollment figures, and student feedback surveys, along with the potential for qualitative improvement in teaching.
Responsibilities of Instructors and TAs for Discussion, Seminar, and Practical Courses
- Discussion & Seminar TAs should hold weekly sessions of 50 minutes (excluding the first week of class, midterms, and finals). Practical Course TAs are expected to assist during class and/or hold regular sessions outside of normal hours for hands-on instruction.
- First-time TAs must complete the mandatory TA training workshop at the beginning of the semester. If absent, they must complete a make-up session on the designated platform within one month of appointment. If the deadline is missed, the course instructor must submit a written explanation.
- TAs must submit a midterm personal reflection and collaborate with instructors on a final course report. If plagiarism or inappropriate conduct is detected in the reflection, the TA will not be reappointed the following semester.
- TAs must attend at least two teaching workshops or instructional sharing sessions each semester—organized or approved by either the Center for Teaching and Learning Development or the General Education Center.
- TAs must cooperate with classroom observations arranged by the aforementioned centers.
- Instructors receiving TA funding for the first time must attend an information session on the TA system.
Evaluation and Recognition for Discussion and Seminar TAs
- Each semester includes at least one classroom observation, along with midterm and final TA feedback surveys.
- Final teaching evaluations use a 5-point scale. Scores below 3 may affect future eligibility, and the instructor must provide a written explanation.
- At the end of each semester, course performance will be evaluated based on implementation outcomes, TA feedback survey response rates, and evaluation results—used as a reference for future funding.
- In accordance with NCCU’s selection guidelines, Outstanding and Excellent TAs will be selected and recognized. Their supervising instructor will also receive a certificate of commendation.
